How to Guide:

Literal swords for kids who play with swords

Not very pirate like (but still awesome) swords that are pretty much appropriate for children who play with swords.

  • Requests from the back seat

It all began with a shout from the back of the van. It was a request to do a project I’m pretty sure my kid got off YouTube.

  • Gather the ingredients

-One bit of dowel/broom handle 16-30” long.

-One half of a pool noodle

-Several zip ties. Enough to make two separate loops around the noodle

-Tape. Duct tape, electrical tape, or cloth tape would all seem to be viable. Here we used two types of tape, more for aesthetics than any other reason

  • Put it together

-Insert the dowel/handle into one end of the half pool noodle

-Wrap the handle and lower part of the noodle with duct tape.

-Zip tie the proximal end of the noodle, pinching the portion of the dowel that’s inserted.

-Wrap tape over the zip ties to hold down the excess or, if the excess was snipped, to cover the sharp little stump that can leave behind.

  • Have fun!

Longer or shorter dowels/handles can be used to change how much force is put through the noodle when it strikes.

Extending the dowel further into the pool noodle will transmit more force through the sword and make it hit harder.

A shorter dowel or minimizing how much extends into the noodle will minimize the force from sword strikes.

    Go sword somewhere.

Go on a quest.

this is so trite it hurts.
